Victorian jewelry
Jewelry of Queen Victoria’s reign, 1837 to 1901: romantic, grand and then aesthetic.
Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901, and the jewelry of her time is usually divided into three phases. The Romantic period favored sentimental motifs: hearts, hands, snakes and flowers. The Grand period, after the death of Prince Albert in 1861, brought mourning jewelry in jet and black enamel alongside bold gold. The Aesthetic period, from the 1880s, turned to lighter designs, stars, crescents and insects set with diamonds.
Diamonds were set in silver-topped gold; colored stones, pearls, enamel and gold work were everywhere.
