Georgian jewelry
Jewelry made during the reigns of the four Georges, 1714 to 1837: hand-made, candlelit and rare.
Georgian jewelry covers the reigns of George I to George IV and William IV in Britain, from 1714 to 1837, and by extension the jewelry of the same period across Europe. Every piece was made entirely by hand.
Diamonds were rose cut or old mine cut and set in silver-topped gold, often in closed, foiled backs, to sparkle by candlelight. Paste, colored foils, cannetille gold work, seed pearls and sentimental jewels such as lockets and mourning rings are all characteristic.
What to look for
Georgian jewelry is rare, and many pieces have been altered. Look for closed backs, hand-made fittings and old cuts, and check that the foils have not been spoiled by water.
