The story

Made in France during the 1970s by the celebrated workshop of Péry & Fils for Van Cleef & Arpels, these 18K yellow gold earrings present a sophisticated interpretation of the checkerboard motif. Each gently curved earring is composed of a grid of rectangular panels, alternating between diagonally grooved gold and diamond-set squares. The 44 diamonds, weighing approximately 0.90 carat in total, are arranged in compact groups of four, their scintillation contrasting with the directional reflections of the engraved metal.

The design captures the architectural sensibility of 1970s French jewelry, when strong geometry and richly worked gold became central to the vocabulary of the great Parisian maisons. The subtle curvature of the earrings lends dimension to the disciplined pattern, while the alternating textures give the composition an almost woven quality.

Péry & Fils was among the distinguished Parisian workshops entrusted with producing jewelry for Van Cleef & Arpels. Its maker's mark, alongside the maison's signature, numbering, and French assay marks, provides an important record of the earrings' manufacture and places them within the tradition of specialized French goldsmithing.

A measured succession of light and texture, where every square contributes to the whole.
