The story

Created by Bulgari circa the 1980s, these Monete earrings incorporate two distinct ancient Roman Republican silver denarii, each individually mounted within a substantial, smoothly rounded yellow gold bezel. The first coin is identified by its engraved setting as a denarius of C. Considius Paetus, dated 49–44 BC, while the second is attributed to Q. Thermius, dated 100–91 BC. Their darkened silver surfaces retain the delicate relief of ancient portraiture, with traces of age and circulation lending each coin an individual character.

The beauty of the composition lies in its contrast. The irregular patina and softened details of the ancient silver are held within immaculate circular borders of warm gold, creating a dialogue between two very different periods of Roman history. The coins are intentionally distinct, their differing profiles and surface textures emphasizing the individuality of the artifacts rather than conventional symmetry.

Bulgari's celebrated Monete collection emerged during the 1960s, drawing inspiration from the archaeological heritage of Rome and the enduring fascination of ancient coinage. By incorporating authentic Greek and Roman coins into contemporary jewelry, the house established a distinctive visual language in which historical objects became integral elements of modern design. The collection gained particular prominence during the 1970s and 1980s, when Bulgari's bold gold settings and appreciation for classical forms found an especially compelling expression.

Measuring approximately 0.75 inches in diameter, these earrings offer a concentrated expression of the Monete aesthetic. Their generous gold surrounds lend substance and warmth, while the ancient coins remain the undisputed focal point. The engraved inscriptions on the reverse of each setting preserve Bulgari's identification of the individual denarii, adding a further dimension of historical interest for the collector.
