Niello
A black metallic alloy inlaid into engraved silver or gold, giving dark designs on a bright ground.
Niello has been used since antiquity and is typical of Russian silver and of decorative work from Thailand. In fine jewelry it appears on cigarette cases, boxes and cufflinks.
What to look for
Niello can crack and fall out. Look for gaps in the black inlay.
