Fluting

Parallel grooves cut or modelled into gold or a stone, like the flutes of a classical column.

Fluting gives rhythm and depth to gold surfaces and was popular in Retro and 1950s jewels, in ring shanks, bracelets and the bold settings of the period.

What to look for

Look for worn ridges and for areas where polishing has softened the grooves.
