Micromosaic
Pictures made of minute pieces of coloured glass, set in jewels and boxes.
Micromosaic was perfected in Rome in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and sold to travellers on the Grand Tour. Views of Rome, birds, flowers and classical motifs are typical.
What to look for
Look for missing pieces and areas filled with coloured wax, and for cracks in the ground. The finer the pieces, the better the work.
