Turquoise
An opaque sky-blue to green stone, prized above all from Persia.
Turquoise is an opaque stone ranging from sky blue to green. The finest, an even robin’s egg blue, came historically from Persia, today Iran. It was used in Georgian and Victorian forget-me-not jewels and in the colorful gold jewelry of the 1950s to 1970s.
What to look for
Turquoise is porous and can change color with skin oils and chemicals. Much turquoise on the market is stabilized or dyed; natural, untreated stones of fine color are rare.
