Aquamarine

Blue to blue-green beryl, the cool stone of Art Deco and Retro jewelry.

Aquamarine is the blue to blue-green variety of beryl, the mineral family of emerald. Its clear, watery color made it popular in Art Deco jewels set in platinum and in the large cocktail rings of the Retro period. The finest stones have a deep, pure blue.

What to look for

Most aquamarine is heat-treated to remove green tones, which is accepted. Large, clean stones are available, so color intensity is the key to value.
