Amethyst
Purple quartz, once as precious as ruby and sapphire.
Amethyst is purple quartz. Until large deposits were found in Brazil in the nineteenth century it was counted among the precious stones. It was set in Georgian cannetille parures and Victorian jewels, and its rich purple was a favorite of the Retro and mid-century jewelers and of Bulgari’s color combinations.
What to look for
The finest amethyst is a deep, even purple with flashes of red. Color can fade with long exposure to strong light.
