Vermeil

Silver covered with a layer of gold, also called silver-gilt.

Vermeil, or silver-gilt, is silver covered with a layer of gold. It has been used for centuries for objects and jewelry, and it was the material of many pieces in Les Must de Cartier line of the 1970s and 1980s.

What to look for

Vermeil is marked as silver, not as gold. Worn high points may show the silver underneath. The difference in value from solid gold is considerable, so it is the first thing to establish.
