Topaz
A hard, brilliant gemstone; the most prized colour, imperial topaz, is a golden orange to pink.
Imperial topaz from Ouro Preto in Brazil was a favourite of Georgian jewelers. Today most blue topaz has been irradiated and heated to produce its colour, which is a modern practice.
What to look for
Topaz is hard but splits easily along one direction, so a sharp knock can crack it. Check for cleavage cracks near the girdle.
