Wood in jewelry
Rare and exotic woods set in gold, used by a number of contemporary jewelers.
Wood offers warmth and lightness that gems cannot, and contemporary houses such as Hemmerle in Munich have used it beside precious stones. The combination is a sign of modern, sculptural jewelry rather than a period one.
What to look for
Wood can dry, crack or swell with moisture. Check for splits near the settings and for a finish that has been worn away.
