Single cut
A simple cut for small diamonds, with a table and eight facets above and below.
The single cut, also called eight cut, is a simplified round cut with a table, eight facets on the crown, eight on the pavilion and sometimes a culet. It was used for small diamonds, where a full brilliant cut would add work but little beauty.
Single-cut diamonds appear around larger stones, in pavé and in the borders of jewels from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth. Their larger facets give a bold, flashing light that suits small stones.
What to look for
In an older jewel, single-cut accent stones are usually a sign that the small diamonds are original. Modern replacement stones are generally full-cut brilliants, which look different under a loupe.
