Pear cut
A teardrop-shaped brilliant cut, rounded at one end and pointed at the other.
The pear cut, or pendeloque, combines a round end and a pointed end in a teardrop outline. It has long been used for pendants and earrings, where it hangs naturally, and for the center of rings and the drops of important necklaces.
Old pear-shaped diamonds were cut by hand and often have softer, less symmetrical outlines than modern ones, which many collectors find more graceful.
What to look for
Check the symmetry of the shoulders and that the point is protected by the setting. As in the marquise, a central “bow tie” is normal but should be discreet.
