Marquise cut

A boat-shaped brilliant cut with two pointed ends, also called navette.

The marquise, or navette, has an elongated outline with two pointed ends, like a small boat. Tradition links its name to the court of Louis XV, and it has appeared in jewelry ever since, from Georgian clusters to the cocktail rings of the 1950s.

Its long shape makes a stone look larger than its weight and lengthens the finger. Marquise diamonds are also used in rows, petals and leaves.

What to look for

The two points are the weakest part of the stone and should be protected by the setting. Look for symmetry between the two halves; a dark “bow tie” across the center is common and should be modest.
