Rivière necklace

A necklace of graduated stones, each in its own setting, flowing like a river.

A rivière, French for river, is a necklace made of a single line of stones, usually diamonds, each in its own collet or setting and linked to the next, without any other decoration. The stones are typically graduated, largest at the center. Rivières were essential jewels of the Georgian and Victorian periods and remain one of the purest forms of diamond jewelry.

What to look for

Check that the stones are well matched in color and cut and that every link moves freely. Old rivières were often shortened or lengthened, which should be disclosed.
