The story
Dating to circa 1910, this remarkable Belle Époque sautoir exemplifies the garland style, one of the defining expressions of jewelry design at the turn of the twentieth century. Multiple closely arranged strands of diamonds form a supple, tapering necklace, punctuated by delicate openwork motifs and the soft luminosity of pearls. At the center, a smaller blue sapphire rests within a diamond-set heart-shaped element, creating a graceful transition to the elaborate pendant suspended below.
The principal pendant centers on an impressive pear-shaped blue sapphire weighing approximately 25 carats, surrounded by diamonds and enclosed within an intricate framework of diamond-set foliate scrolls. Its openwork design evokes the ribbons, wreaths, and floral garlands that characterized the Belle Époque aesthetic, while the sapphire's saturated blue provides a striking contrast to the surrounding brilliance.
The garland style emerged from a renewed fascination with eighteenth-century French decorative arts, particularly the neoclassical vocabulary of Louis XVI. Jewelers translated these motifs into exceptionally delicate compositions of diamonds, often set in platinum, creating the impression of lace suspended against the skin. The elongated proportions of the sautoir, the intricate pendant, and the interplay of diamonds and pearls place this necklace firmly within that tradition, balancing ornamental richness with remarkable visual lightness.
Like a garland suspended in light, its delicate tracery gathers around a single, extraordinary depth of blue.
