Owl mark
A French mark showing an owl, struck on gold and silver imported into France.
Since 1893 imported gold and silver offered for sale in France have been struck with an owl. A jewel with an owl was therefore not made in France, but tested there, which helps to place it.
What to look for
An owl mark on a piece sold as French-made, or alongside French workshop marks only, deserves a closer look.
