Ear clip

An earring fastened with a hinged clip rather than a post through a pierced ear.

Clips were usual for fine earrings from the 1930s to the 1970s, when many women did not have pierced ears. Many vintage clips have since been fitted with posts.

What to look for

Clips can be converted to posts, or posts added alongside clips, by a good jeweler. Check whether a conversion has been made and how it was done.
