Objet de vertu
A small precious object, such as a box, cigarette case, desk clock or letter opener, made with the skill of a jeweler.
From the eighteenth century onwards, jewelers made fine objects as well as jewels. Fabergé, Cartier, Verdura and Bulgari all made them, often in gold, enamel and hardstone.
What to look for
Check hinges and closures, enamel for chips and the movement of any clock. Original cases and fittings add value.
