Demantoid garnet

A vivid green garnet from the Urals, with a fire stronger than diamond.

Demantoid means “diamond-like”. It was found in the Ural Mountains in the mid-nineteenth century and became a favourite of the Belle Époque, used by Fabergé and in the enamelled lizards, snakes and dragonflies of the period. Fine stones are rarely large.

What to look for

Russian demantoids often contain fine golden fibres arranged like a horsetail, which collectors prize. The stone is softer than sapphire, so check facet edges for wear.
