The story

Created by Joel Arthur Rosenthal (JAR) in Paris during the 2010s, these Lumaconi earrings transform aluminum into a richly textured, shell-inspired form. Each earring presents a softly domed silhouette that gradually widens toward an undulating lower edge, its surface articulated by closely spaced vertical ribs. Following the curvature of the metal, these fine ridges create alternating passages of light and shadow, giving the composition a remarkable sense of depth. The warm golden coloration accentuates the relief of the surface, while the generous two-inch proportions lend the pair a commanding presence without diminishing the delicacy of their natural inspiration.

JAR jewels occupy a singular place in contemporary collecting. Rosenthal is known for producing his work in deliberately limited quantities and for maintaining an unusually discreet presence, making pieces bearing the JAR name relatively scarce on the secondary market. His aluminum creations are a particularly imaginative part of this body of work, using an unexpected material as a vehicle for saturated color, sculptural volume, and his longstanding fascination with flowers, leaves, and the natural world. This pair, preserved with its original JAR pouch, is an especially evocative example.

Weighing 43.8 grams, the earrings possess a substantial physical presence, their broad, ribbed surfaces emphasizing the relationship between repetition, curvature, and reflected light.

The quiet architecture of a seashell, enlarged and preserved in golden folds.
