Retailer’s signature
A signature showing who sold a jewel, which is not always who made it.
Many great houses sold pieces made by independent workshops, and many retailers signed jewels they bought from makers. Tiffany & Co., for example, signed pieces by outside designers and workshops, and Paris houses used specialist workshops.
What to look for
The workshop’s maker’s mark, where present, tells the rest of the story.
