Gypsy setting
A stone set flush into the metal, with only its top visible.
In a gypsy or flush setting, the stone is sunk into a hole in the metal so that its table sits level with the surface, held by the metal pressed around it. The setting was popular in Victorian rings, especially men’s rings, and in the bold gold jewelry of the mid-twentieth century.
It is very secure and suits pieces worn every day.
What to look for
The metal around the stone should be smooth and continuous. Wear on the gold can loosen the stone over many years.
