Basse-taille
Translucent enamel over a metal surface engraved in low relief, so the pattern shows through.
In basse-taille, French for low cut, the metal is engraved or engine-turned in low relief and covered with translucent enamel. The depth of the enamel varies with the engraving, creating shades of color and a shimmering pattern beneath the surface. Guilloché enamel on Belle Époque watches and compacts is a form of basse-taille.
What to look for
The enamel should be clear and even. Chips are easy to see and difficult to repair invisibly.
