Channel setting

A row of stones set between two parallel walls of metal.

In a channel setting, stones sit side by side between two parallel walls of metal, held at their edges, with no metal between them. It is used for rows of baguettes, square stones and round diamonds in bands, bracelets and the borders of Art Deco jewels.

The setting protects the stones well and gives a clean, continuous line.

What to look for

Check that the stones are level, tightly set and matched in color. A loose stone in a channel can move and chip its neighbors.
