The story

This Art Nouveau brooch captures the bird in full flight, its slender wings sweeping outward in a graceful, almost weightless silhouette. Translucent enamel in soft blue, lavender, and opalescent grey follows the contours of its body and feathers, allowing subtle golden reflections to emerge beneath the surface. Fine rows of diamonds trace the upper edges of the wings, while a tiny ruby eye provides a vivid point of color. The forked tail, with its slender, tapering feathers, completes the bird's remarkably naturalistic form.

The swallow held a special place in the decorative language of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Associated with spring, fidelity, and the promise of return, it became a favored motif among Art Nouveau jewelers, whose work celebrated the poetry and movement of the natural world. Here, the delicate modeling of the feathers and the restrained use of gemstones allow the enamelwork to take precedence, giving the brooch a particularly painterly quality.

Weighing just 5.71 grams, the jewel possesses an extraordinary sense of lightness, its elongated silhouette suggesting movement even at rest.

A small messenger of spring, forever suspended between earth and sky.
