Suzanne Belperron
The great French designer who refused to sign her jewels: “My style is my signature.”
Suzanne Belperron (1900–1983) designed for René Boivin from 1919, then from 1932 for the gem dealer Bernard Herz, and after the war in partnership with his son as Herz-Belperron. Her bold, sculptural jewels in chalcedony, rock crystal and hammered gold were worn by the Duchess of Windsor, Diana Vreeland and Elsa Schiaparelli.
Signature and marks
Her pieces are unsigned, which makes attribution a matter of design, construction, French marks and archival evidence. Certificates are issued on the basis of the Belperron archives.
