The story
Created in France circa 1910, this Art Nouveau pendant is fashioned in richly textured 18K yellow gold, its elongated oval silhouette formed by two intertwined serpents. Their bodies curve toward one another, revealing finely modeled scales, overlapping contours, and delicately worked surfaces that alternate between soft satin textures and burnished highlights. At the summit, an old mine-cut diamond weighing approximately 1.02 carats rests within a sculptural gold setting, its antique facets lending a gentle, irregular brilliance to the composition. A curling flourish of gold completes the lower section, balancing the pendant's generous proportions with an ornamental sense of movement.
The serpent was among the most enduring symbols in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century jewelry, associated with eternity, transformation, wisdom, and devotion. Within the Art Nouveau movement, its sinuous anatomy offered jewelers an ideal subject for the period's fascination with organic forms, flowing lines, and the expressive possibilities of nature. Rather than depicting the creature with strict naturalism, this pendant transforms its coiling body into an almost architectural ornament, where symbolism and decoration become inseparable.
Suspended from a twisted navy cord, the pendant possesses the sculptural presence of an antique jewel conceived as much for its silhouette as for its precious materials. The warmth of the gold, the relief of its carefully worked surfaces, and the solitary diamond together evoke the imaginative spirit of French jewelry at the turn of the century.
An ancient symbol of eternity, given new life in the flowing gold of Art Nouveau.
