The story

Dating to the 1880s, this Victorian serpent brooch is fashioned in 14K yellow gold, its elongated body twisting into an intricate arrangement of overlapping coils. The surface is finely engraved with a delicate, scale-like pattern, giving the gold a tactile richness that follows every curve. At the center, a pear-shaped sapphire of deep blue is set into the serpent's head, while small diamond accents illuminate its eyes and the attachment of a softly luminous pearl suspended from its mouth. The contrast between the textured gold, saturated sapphire, and gentle movement of the pearl lends the jewel an unusually expressive character.

The serpent held a particularly meaningful place in Victorian jewelry. Associated with eternity, devotion, wisdom, and renewal, its symbolism became especially fashionable following Queen Victoria's engagement ring from Prince Albert, which famously took the form of a snake. Throughout the nineteenth century, jewelers explored the motif in increasingly imaginative ways, transforming its coiling anatomy into rings, bracelets, necklaces, and brooches. This example belongs to that romantic tradition, combining naturalistic engraving with a distinctly theatrical silhouette.

The central sapphire weighs 1.11 carats and is accompanied by a gemological report from GRS confirming its natural origin, with no indications of thermal treatment. Its rich blue color provides a striking focal point within the warm gold composition, while the pendant pearl introduces a final note of softness.

An emblem of devotion and renewal, its golden coils preserving the private language of Victorian sentiment.
