Vintage Van Cleef & Arpels “Manchette” Hammered Gold Cuff Bracelet

A surface poised somewhere between antiquity and the moon.

Created by Van Cleef & Arpels in France during the 1970s, the celebrated Manchette is a wide, free-form cuff worked in substantial 18K yellow gold. Its irregular hammered and embossed surface draws directly from late Etruscan goldwork—an ancient language of texture transformed by the maison into something emphatically modern. The gold is deliberately uneven, almost geological, catching light across ridges, hollows, and polished relief rather than through conventional ornament. Van Cleef & Arpels continues to identify the design today as Etruscan-inspired.

Yet the Manchette belonged unmistakably to its own moment. Emerging in the wake of the 1969 lunar landing, its cratered surface was also understood as evoking the newly encountered landscape of the moon—a remarkable convergence of archaeological revival and Space Age imagination. Period examples were produced in limited numbers during the 1970s, making the surviving vintage cuffs particularly compelling to collectors.

The design became closely associated with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, whose sophisticated personal style helped define the wide hammered cuff as an icon of the decade. She owned a pair and wore them frequently, appearing in numerous photographs—including a memorable 1977 image in conversation with Muhammad Ali. Her affinity for the Manchette cemented its place among the defining Van Cleef & Arpels gold designs of the 1970s.
