A richly colored Italian necklace in which repetition becomes ornament.
Made in Italy circa 1950, this necklace is composed of approximately 60 carats of rectangular step-cut garnets, their deep wine-red color arranged in rhythmic pairs along an articulated gold framework. Each pair of stones is set against a curved link edged in vivid blue and white enamel, creating an unexpected flash of color between the garnet and warm gold. The design carries the confident scale of postwar Italian jewelry, when saturated colored stones, enamel, and strong repeating forms brought renewed richness to traditional goldwork. At 16.5 inches long, the necklace sits relatively close to the neck, allowing its succession of garnet-set links to read as a continuous band of color.
The oval cabochon garnet incorporated into the clasp is a particularly thoughtful detail, carrying the composition around the neck rather than allowing the fastening to interrupt it.
A necklace built like a cadence—garnet, enamel, gold, repeated until they become one continuous line.
